Eating dinner

Post by William Holden on Sat Nov 02, 2013 8:02 am

On a Friday evening, I am rarely at home and can be found around or about the town. During the week, i will prepare meals and dine at my home with either friends or associates but on a Friday when the work is done, I prefer to get out of the house and socialise. Looking around me I note the usual crowd and a couple of unfamiliar faces, having lived here for three years, I consider myself to be established but not a towns person. Though townspeople are friendly enough and will stop and chat to me, approach me for help or to ask my opinion.

I was actually honoured this year by getting approached by the wonderful Miss Layton to coach the soccer teams. I knew the real reason was that after the last years dismal performance and the refusal of the school coach to give more than rudimentary support to the teams, they needed another more enthusiastic coach. I also knew they hoped that with my coaching would come my sponsorship for the team, kit and equipment was expensive and my big house and successful consultancy meant that I could afford it easily.

Seeing Kayla approach with my Diet coke and a menu, I smile. She always makes an effort despite the ridiculous hours she works and the young child she has to support. I feel bad for her but she seems to take it all in her stride. Her short blonde hair is under the paper hat she has to wear and her well proportioned form form is in the clean and pressed uniform, that Gus likes her to wear.

"Hello, Kayla.. how are you tonight?" I enquire as I take the menu and then look at the specials board for inspiration. Her reply is positive, she is good and the little one is well, looking forward to school. I enquire if I can expect to see him  at try outs for my soccer teams, but we know that is a joke, he is 7 years old not able to play for the team. I select the chicken pie with new potatoes, it is home made and tastes great. she gives me a smile and I mentally note to make sure my tip is a handsome for her and leaves me. I open the folder and start up my tablet, first reviewing the news and then the international news there. I check the time, its about an hour and half before i wander to the coffee shop and see this new local band.

After reading the news and heading to the English football section to check how the teams are doing at home , I surf for a while, cascading through web pages on science and technology and reading an article on driverless cars. I am occasionally interrupted by new patrons as they say hello and enquire about the soccer try-outs or how I am doing. Gus makes a welcome appearance and makes small talk about something he heard about Britain on CNN early that day, I offer my opinion and we joke about for a bit before new orders for food arrive.
I finish up with my chicken pie savouring the last mouthful as I place my knife and fork at the angle on the right hand side of the plate. I smile as I do knowing that most watch me with curiosity as I eat as I still use the European way of eating and as such it highlights whilst welcome I am still not considered a towns person. I close the leather flap on the tablet and it enters sleep mode. I pay my bill and leave a generous tip as always. I make sure Kayla is serving as I do leave to avoid her, I carry the English embarrassment of tipping still and hate to see people judge what I have left.
I move to the door and decide whether it is the bar for a drink before the band or directly there to get a decent seat. The coffee shop will still be setting up but with little activity for another half an hour, I will just be sitting there and watching them tune up. The bar will be lively, the TV will be on and a crowd will be there to interact with. No doubt the coach will be too, his opinions being bellowed along the bar to all. The only one who seems to be able to silence him and offer a more informed opinion is Taylor. I don’t mind the Coach, but he and I are chalk and cheese, his opinion of me picking up the soccer team is low and he does not consider it a proper sport. In fact one of the main reasons for last year’s dismal performance, was he put off most the guys from trying out , such was his lampooning of the sport!

I looks at my watch again, the period of hesitation has only take up five minutes of his time and I hover at the door way trying to decide bar or straight to the coffee shop. Deciding I don't need a drink to enjoy the music and I can always stop in there later when the coach is so drunk, his comments will be near on unintelligible. I set off for the coffee shop, it will good to catch up with Roofie anyway first.

I hear the bus pull off on its return to the city, that was the last one of the evening and as such I see a number of faces I know walking off to their homes from work or straight into Aces for a drink. I wave to David, one of the guys I do enjoy to hang with at Aces, as he beckons me to join him and give the time sign for later.

I pull the long brown leather jacket that reaches mid thigh up a bit. The summer seems a distant memory now and the autumn is certainly attacking the trees in the park with a vengeance. Under the jacket is a shirt open at the neck and faded but fashionable jeans. I finish with Timberland boots as old as the hills well worn and much loved by me one for the few items I refuse to get rid of. I seldom shop and tend to stick to the same styles for a while. Then when I see something that catches my eye, i will make a note and buy those.

I cross the street, the coffee shop is up on the corner closer to the park and I walk in that direction. There is a van outside and I see two young guys and the record store owner, Robbie, shifting in the gear for the gig tonight. I speed up slightly when it looks like they might need a hand with the drums all packed in the carry cases.
